Friday, Elliott, who is going through the ESPN car wash today, trashed Harbaugh, telling Paul Finebaum that he’s “tired” of hearing about him. Elliott also called out Harbaugh for talking smack when he hasn’t won a rivalry game. TORONTO – Barrick Gold Corp. says it expects to take a US$429-million charge following an order by the Chilean government to close all surface facilities at its troubled Pascua-Lama project high in the Andes mountains.The gold miner says it is reclassifying Pascua-Lama’s 14 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves, which are based on an open pit mine plan, as measured and indicated resources.Barrick is studying the potential of developing Pascua-Lama as an underground mining operation, rather than an open pit.It says the change would address a number of concerns by reducing the overall environmental impacts.The project, which straddles the Chile-Argentina border, has been criticized for threatening water supplies and glaciers.Barrick says it will provide a further update on the Pascua-Lama project at the company’s investor day on Feb. 22.Companies in this story: (TSX:ABX)
North American markets saw broad declines Friday after President Donald Trump proposed more tariffs on Chinese goods.The announcement late Thursday that Trump was considering duties on an additional $100 billion in goods imported from China marked a shift in tone from U.S. officials earlier in the week that the U.S. was looking to negotiate a resolution to the trade dispute.The latest potential tariffs come on top of the tariffs the U.S. has proposed on US$50 billion worth Chinese goods, which China promised to match earlier this week, and an earlier back-and-forth after the U.S. imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum.The day-to-day shifts in trade sentiments are now dictating markets more than the underlying health of the economy, said Jamie Robertson, senior portfolio manager at Manulife Asset Management.“Rhetoric is supplanting fundamentals at this particular point. The economic data both in the U.S. and Canada continues to show the economies are doing well…but clearly the market’s completely preoccupied with the spectre of a trade war between the U.S. and China.”“You flip and flop around when you get into these periods of volatility we’re into now,” he said.The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 148.64 points at 15,207.41, to leave the index down 1.04 per cent for the week.U.S. indexes saw declines of more than two per cent on Friday as trade concerns hit the U.S. more than other markets, said Robertson.The Dow Jones industrial average was down 572.46 points at 23,932.76. Last Friday, Kris Bryant, the Cubs’ anointed savior, was called up from the minors after weeks of debate about whether he should’ve just started the season in the majors. There is an aura of myth to Bryant’s arrival, as though the stars have aligned to offer the Cubs a chance to fulfill a prophecy. Yet Bryant is still an untested prospect, and, as Cubs fans know too well, even the best prospects can fail to live up to expectations.But Bryant really is special — he’s the rare prospect that has both scouts and stats in complete agreement. Because of the unique intersection of scouting know-how and minor league data, Bryant is likely to match the hype.Let’s start with the stats. In this case, all we have to go by are projection systems, which take the minor league data of previous prospects and compare it with their MLB results to predict what up-and-coming players will accomplish. That’s no easy task — the minor league data is sparse, and performance is confounded by the effects of the league and the age differences between players.In Bryant’s case, however, the projections are so high that there is little room for doubt. No matter whether you look at FanGraphs’ Steamer (.260/.333/.498) or Baseball Prospectus’s PECOTA (.265/.356/.525), all the algorithms are in agreement in their preseason projections: Bryant is going to be a fantastic hitter.1This kind of agreement among separate systems often means greater certainty in the resulting prediction. ESPN’s Dan Szymborski, who runs another algorithm called ZiPS, tweeted that Bryant’s is the best prediction he’s ever given to a prospect.There’s no mystery as to how Bryant arrived at these projections — the guy hit between 60 percent and 120 percent better than average while in the minors, depending on the level. Still, Bryant’s projection is so extreme that at one point, the developers who run the projection systems became worried. In a mid-winter Twitter consultation, baseball projection system developers compared Bryant’s projections to make sure that they weren’t out of line. There was consensus: All of their independently developed algorithms were giving Bryant one of the top hitting lines in the majors.Even so, not all prospects hit as well as their projections say they should. The computers, operating solely on minor league performance, can fail to notice fatal flaws in a hitter’s swing, flaws that can be exploited ruthlessly at the major league level. That’s partly why projection systems aren’t as good as scouts at predicting how prospects will perform in the major leagues. So, despite their depiction in “Moneyball,” scouts are an integral part of evaluating baseball players, and that goes double for prospects.Scouts look at the shape of a hitter’s swing, if he can generate power, and how easily he adapts to a pitcher’s shifting tactics. Bryant’s ludicrous numbers in the minors were no guarantee that the scouts would love the tools he used to achieve those numbers.The scouts are every bit as high on Bryant as the projections. He was ranked the No. 1 prospect in baseball for 2015 by venerable scouting organization Baseball America. FanGraphs also put him at No. 1, Baseball Prospectus put him at No. 5, and a host of others ranked him similarly. All publications praised his rare, top-notch, seemingly effortless power. As with the projection systems, a consensus quickly developed, and that consensus proclaimed Bryant the best prospect in baseball.The highest-rated prospects of the past 25 years have tended to become great major leaguers — on average. Yet there are some notable busts, players who the scouts thought were destined for greatness but who ended up falling short. Orioles outfielder Delmon Young, for example, consistently rated among the best prospects in baseball four years in a row, only to turn in a disappointing, journeyman career. Projection systems aren’t immune to mistakes, either. Once upon a time, Eduardo Nunez was PECOTA’s favorite, but he’s since become better-known for hitting a preponderance of popups. There’s no foolproof way to tell how a player will develop or respond to the challenges of the major leagues.Independently, then, each source has its share of errors. Often, the scouts will disagree with the predictions, or vice versa. Scouts might see future potential that never manifests in the majors. Or PECOTA will fail to consider a player’s unfixable weakness against major league competition.But Bryant has the approval of both stats and scouts, which is why he’s so special. Using data on historical prospect rankings2Which are generously provided by Chris St. John. and PECOTA projections going back to 2004, I looked for players who received comparable acclaim from both PECOTA and the scouts. Here is a complete list of the players in my data set who received a consensus prospect ranking better than fifth and a PECOTA-projected OPS greater than the projected league average. Notably, there’s not a true bust among them. Melvin Upton (formerly B. J.) isn’t a good hitter anymore, but he was excellent for the first six years of his career (just less than the seven years for which the Cubs will control Bryant).A few of these players (such as Profar and Wieters) have fallen victim to injuries. This is the kind of problem that can end the career of any young player, no matter how bright his future might be. But Bryant has yet to suffer any serious injuries, whether in the minors or in college before that.4Whereas both Profar and Wieters lost time in the minors due to injury. To the extent that players can be injury prone, Bryant has so far shown no such inclination.Bryant has won the acclaim of both the projections and the scouts. Rarely are the two in such resounding agreement. He is likely to be great, and while it may be too soon to be planning a parade, it’s not too early to begin envisioning a long period of Cubs offensive dominance led by Kris Bryant. The symmetron mechanism is one way to screen fifth forces.”In theory, a symmetron field will mediate a fifth force when its symmetry is broken, which requires a low-density vacuum. In this broken-symmetry phase, the symmetron couples to matter with a certain matter coupling energy. Here, Upadhye investigated the scenario where the matter coupling energy is 1 TeV and the symmetron mass is 10-3 eV. Then he solved the symmetron equations of motion to estimate constraints on the symmetron. Mathematicians offer unified theory of dark matter, dark energy, altering Einstein field equations This symmetron field regime, where the matter coupling energy is 1 TeV, is not only of interest due to its potential to be tested. This energy is also possibly associated with physics beyond the standard model. If this is true, experiments may reveal new effects that indicate new physics. One such experiment is the Eöt-Wash torsion pendulum experiment being carried out by scientists at the University of Washington in Seattle. Upadhye’s calculations allowed him to predict the torque signal that the symmetron would produce in an Eöt-Wash experiment.”It turns out that Eöt-Wash just happens to probe an interesting range of parameters because they have targeted the experiment at the right range of distances,” he said. “Fifth force screening mechanisms are not perfect, so there are residual fifth forces which can be detected by sufficiently sensitive experiments probing the right distances. My paper approximated these residual fifth forces and showed that Eöt-Wash excludes a substantial portion of them.”In this experiment, the presence of a fifth force would cause a metal disk to rotate in such a way as to align with a second metal disk.”Eöt-Wash uses a pair of metal disks with the same pattern of holes in each one,” Upadhye said. “The upper disk is suspended from a wire, allowing it to rotate freely, while the lower disk is rotated at a uniform rate. Fifth forces would cause the upper disk to rotate so as to align its pattern of holes with that on the lower disk. So, by looking for small torques on the upper disk leading to torsional oscillation, Eöt-Wash can search for fifth forces. The experiment can be repeated over a range of separations between upper and lower disks, allowing them to determine the rate at which fifth forces decrease with distance. Since this experiment has been designed to study distances as low as 50 microns, it is very useful for testing fifth forces due to dark energy.”Last December, Upadhye visited the Eöt-Wash group, and the researchers were very interested in testing new dark energy theories. Currently they are designing a new torsion pendulum experiment which should be substantially more sensitive to fifth forces. Upadhye plans to work further on his calculations to allow for more accurate testing.”An approximate treatment such as that in my symmetrons paper is useful for forecasting constraints, but in order to analyze the real data from the upcoming Eöt-Wash experiment, I plan to do more accurate computations of these fifth forces,” Upadhye said. “Several years ago I did such a computation for chameleon fifth forces. I plan to speed up that calculation as well as extend it to symmetron fifth forces. Using the extensive computational resources available here at Argonne, I will analyze Eöt-Wash data and test these dark energy theories.” The Eöt-Wash experiment may test for Upadhye’s predicted torque signal due to the symmetron field. He proposes that short-range gravity experiments can search for the fifth force at these distances and possibly reveal if dark energy is in fact a symmetron field.”Much of my work has focused on chameleon dark energy theories, and I really only started thinking about symmetrons last summer,” Upadhye told Phys.org. “Modern experimental techniques and technologies have advanced enough to search for new physics at distances of interest for dark energy theories.”As Upadhye explained, a symmetron field could fulfill the role of dark energy by acting as a negative pressure.”Dark energy in general can be described by a constant (or slowly varying) vacuum energy density, such as that due to a field whose potential is minimized at a small, positive value,” he said. “In the presence of such an energy density, Einstein’s equation of General Relativity (GR) predicts that the universe will expand at an accelerating rate. In GR, pressure gravitates; positive pressures contribute to the decelerating expansion of the universe. Dark energy acts as a negative pressure which leads to an accelerating expansion.”The simplest model of a dark energy is Einstein’s cosmological constant, a constant vacuum energy density which explains all available data. The big question in cosmology is whether or not the dark energy is just a cosmological constant. WBSEDCL has commissioned 1,002 CKM new 33 KV line, 2,655 CKM new 11 KV line and 21,459 CKM new LT line during last year, raising the present line lengths of 33 KV line to 15,029 CKM and 11 KV line to 1,64,333.77 CKM. Around 6,704 new distribution transformers with a cumulative capacity of 572.182 MVA have been installed, taking the total number of distribution transformers to 2,60,443. Phase I and phase II of Strengthening and Extending Electricity Distribution Network (SEEDN) with a sanctioned amount of Rs 619 crore has been taken up for further strengthening of the distribution system, for providing quality power to the people.
