first_imgKirk Herbstreit thinks a team could be out of the playoff.Last night, the updated College Football Playoff rankings were unveiled. There were few surprises.Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Michigan made up the top four, in that order. Right behind them were Georgia and Oklahoma. While Georgia is on the outside looking in, the Bulldogs control their own destiny. Win out, beat Alabama in the SEC title game and they’re in. The same probably can’t be said for Oklahoma.Even if the Sooners go 12-1 with a win in the Big 12 Championship Game, they might still be left out. Kirk Herbstreit thinks so.During his analysis of the rankings last night on ESPN, Herbie said only five teams control their own destiny, and did not include the Sooners.“They need help. Oklahoma needs a Michigan loss or a Notre Dame loss. That’s not controlling their own destiny,” Herbstreit said.In our estimation, Herbstreit seems to be correct. If Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame are all undefeated, they will all be in the playoff. If Michigan and Oklahoma are both 12-1, the Wolverines likely keep the edge because they will have road wins over Ohio State and Michigan State, plus wins over Penn State, Wisconsin and whoever the Big Ten West champion would be.It is hard to imagine that resume not being good enough to make the CFP.[ 247 Sports ]last_img
